Rocca delle Tre Contrade : THE masterclass

Rocca delle Tre Contrade is perched atop its own panoramic hill between Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea

Few will journey to Italy without thought of the food, but for gastronomes with a particular penchant for Sicilian fare, a new adventure at Rocca delle Tre Contrade will deliver an unmissable opportunity to revel in the region’s cuisine and culture from November 9 to 16.

At the helm of the event is Relæ’s proprietor-chef Christian Puglisi, left, who will be accompanied by his sommelier and business partner Alessandro Perricone | Image: Relæ

At the helm of the event is Sicilian native Christian Puglisi, emeritus of kitchens including Noma and el Bulli and currently chef proprietor at Copenhagen’s award-winning Restaurant Relæ, whose participation is as personal as it is professional. Aptly named Return to Sicily, the week’s festivities will mark Puglisi’s first visit to the island to cook professionally since he became a chef.

Guests will be hard-pressed to find a villa that evokes Sicily’s Arcadian charm as artfully as Tre Contrade, which is perched atop its own panoramic hill between Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. Accompanied by his sommelier and business partner Alessandro Perricone, Puglisi will transform the villa – originally built in 1850 – into a fully immersive workshop space covering everything from butchery and breadmaking to foraging and lemon picking.

Workshops will also venture outside the villa, with the itinerary featuring a number of outdoor excursions, including a visit to the farmer who brought the Nebrodi black pig back from extinction, trips to boutique wineries in the emerging Etna wine region and, on one of the evenings, a tour of Catania’s street-food scene.

But if the urge to relax ever prevails, there will be ample time to explore Tre Contrade’s palatial grounds, recruit another guest for a game of tennis, or simply resign oneself to the spa’s steam room. Rates start at €5,950 per person (including meals and accommodation), but don’t wait – the adventure is limited to just 16 spaces.
